Kakola develops as an urban area
Closed from the inhabitants of the city for a long time, the Kakolanmäki prison area is dominated by gorgeous old prison buildings and a park-like yard area with small hardwood forests and rocky slopes. As a result of excavations carried out at an earlier time, there are also steep and broken rock walls. The hill is distinguished in the cityscape as a green, attractive and unique natural environment. From further away the granite buildings act as a landmark to the inhabitants.
In the coming years, the Kakolanmäki area will develop into an active element of the City of Turku. The prison operations will end in 2007, and the area will be converted into a lively district for inhabitants, businesses and organisations. Special attention will be paid to preserving as much of the old buildings as possible and taking care of the verdancy of the area in the planning of Kakolanmäki. Furthermore, for example traffic solutions will be planned carefully to suit the challenging differences of height. The area will be integrated into the city structure, but on the other hand, the strong historical qualities that remind of the former life of the area will be retained.

The New Kakola project
In the New Kakola project for the development of the Kakolanmäki area, the City of Turku and Senate Properties are together building the area into a functioning high-quality concentration of urban living and business. The idea is to make Kakola an integral part of the city structure, at the same time respecting the old prison buildings and the verdancy of the area. Through co-operation and by combining special expertise from different fields the Kakola area will be made into a diverse and functioning entity that will serve residents, companies and investors alike.
